The Whalers’ Memory Bank is a living, growing, online time capsule that tells the story of modern whaling (between 1904-1965) in the Southern Ocean through the memories of those that experienced it. British companies played a key role in the industry and had a largely Scottish workforce, attracting many working-class men with the promise of adventure and competitive wages.

We co-wrote The National Lottery bid and worked in partnership with the South Georgia Museum team to deliver the project, taking on messaging, design and production of the site working with our digital partners Monster. CCC also produced video and interactive elements with other archival content brought together for the first time. When the project launched in June 2023, CCC worked with the South Georgia Museum team to run a number of workshops with whaling veterans in their communities where they shared their stories, knowledge and personal collections. The museum has also worked with other Scottish museums and has received several hundred items that also now form part of the website.

As a result, the Whalers’ Memory Bank provides insights into what life was like for whalers on South Georgia who had travelled 8,000 miles from home in Scotland to find work. Ex-whalers joined a public event with Dan Snow to celebrate the launch of the Memory Bank at Discovery Point in Dundee.
